Real Media Text

When creating real media texts conventions are important because they give a plan and template for my work. Conventions are solely based on previous real media text. Conventions are stereotypical so with my music magazine and horror trailer, the conventions seen before by the audience, allowed it to become recognisable. The product follows a specific path and structure in order to make the product attractive to the target audience. This makes the likelihood of purchase higher. A lack of understanding of conventions led to my struggle at the beginning of the year. The sub genres in horror all seemed to blur together and become incoherent. But now I am able to understand the significance of conventions and use them to create and unique and aesthetically pleasing product.

My brief was to create a front cover, contents page and double page spread of a music magazine. My magazine genre was R&B and used conventions from similar magazines of the same genre. Through looking at magazines such as VIBE, NME and XXL. I found that these magazines use eye catching, bright and visually entertaining colours and images to draw in their audience. The model is positioned in the centre along with a large bold masthead with the magazines name. The costume and colours determines the mood and atmosphere of the magazine. In my magazine my model was dressed in black with a gold necklace to connote wealth. The hair style and jewellery has connotations of wealth and the Hip Hop and R&B culture.

In my second year my brief was to produce a horror teaser trailer on a sub genre of my choice. I identified the specific conventions of my chosen genre, slasher, and began to create my product from that information. Overall, horror trailers include a dark and depressed mise-en-scene. The antagonist is mysterious. A horror trailer will use a montage or ‘disruption’ montage to show panic and horror. Transitions range from slow to fast pace with fade to blacks and jump cuts.

In conclusion, over the past 2 years my skills and using conventions have developed considerably. I recognise that their purpose is to make the product easily identifiable to the audience. My work was influenced by real life media texts making it not original but a bricolage. It uses what we’ve seen before to create something new.
