Essay Plan 2

To what extent are contemporary media regulated adequately?
Why is the regulation of media so complex?

- What Points address the question? (P) (E.g. Increasing Liberalism, Desentisation, Impact of Technology, Catharsis and U&G individual needs over Effects and Copycat)

• Social Media .E.g. Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook
• Netflix – Streaming Services
• Online Streaming services
• Regulation of online content
• The lack of control over online material
• Access 24/7
• No Regulation over the internet
• Impact of Technology

- Which Case Studies? (E)

House Of Cards
• Netflix
• Instagram accidental suicide
• Swatting
• Rihanna
• Netflix movie ‘LOVE’
• Logan Paul
• YouTube Guidelines

- Which Regulators? (E)

• No online regulators
• But Netflix does offer its original content up to be regulated by the
BBFC
• But they can choose not to follow their guide lines

- Which Theories & Debates? (A)

• Desensitisation
• Cathartic
• A liberal view would hold the programme to account for its deliberately negative representation of the residence - assembling all the most negative footage and focusing on this
• Moral Panics are created by the media (and now social media) to demonise and marginalise a group in society that threaten the norms and agreed values of society to make them hate figures or perceived as a threat to social order ('normality' as it currently stands). This often then leads to justification for further control, laws and regulation in response to social outrage (stoked up by the media).

- Future prediction?

• Society will begin to become more liberal over regulation
• Maybe stricter regulation of social media
• The introduction of social media regulators
• Netflix will continue to offer up their shows to be regulated
• Netflix may create their own online Regulator

- Historical Context?

The increased liberalism of the BBFC
• Examples of Netflix programming that has been given classification
• BBFC history of ratings
• The change of classification
• History of YouTube guidelines
