Filmmakers are forever pushing the boundaries of what entertainment and thrilling the audience, forcing regulators to become more and more liberal with their regulating techniques. A desensitised and adrenaline fuelled nation means they require more explicit content. The BBFC have become more liberal over the last 80 years. This is due to the desensitisation of society meaning they are no longer satisfied with subpar acting and the poor horror films of be 1980’s. In today’s society, producers and directors would need to use more effects and graphic images to illicit a reaction from the audience. Consequently, we watch films for cathartic release; meaning to pure ourselves of our impure thoughts and possibly violent tendencies. How well does contemporary media regulation protect the public? Regulation is the control and protection of young and vulnerable people in society. The film industry is regulated by the BBFC, with television being regulated by OFCOM and social media being self-regulated. In the past regulators were very harsh and critical of media, often banning and or offering extensive cuts to make the media more conducive to their guidelins. The BBFC often banned films, for example The Evil Dead. The BBFC are a non-statutory regulating body that regulate proactively. The body will watch the film before release and deliver an age classification. They may also offer cuts and/or changes to be made in the film for the film to be released. The application of age classifications allows the film to be viewed by the appropriate audiences to minimise risk inappropriate content being viewed. Should there be a set moral standard that does not change across time?

Regulation of media has more benefits than negative effects. Protecting young vulnerable children from the effects of the constant stream of media we take in daily should be an undertaking we are glad to take. It can be argued that moral standards in media have fallen leading to more an more displays of sexual and graphic content and foul language. Morally, the more television and films we watch the more our morals are forgotten or changed. Subsequently it could be argued that the moral standard has declined due to the desensitisation of the people that watch it. After years of being put in front of televisions and being exposed to media it’s no wonder we as a nation have developed a tolerance to be explicit things we see in the media. Therefore, film makers and producers have had to step up their game when in comes to frightening or interesting enticing the everyday viewer.
