Which regulator is the most effective?

Regulation is the control of media in order to protect young and vulnerable people in society. The BBFC are a non statutory body that regulate proactively, OFCOM are statutory and respond reactively, with Social Media being self regulated. I brilliant BBFC are the most effective regulator as they are able to view the context before it is screened.

The BBFC is effective as they are able to issue age certifications to films both online and in the cinema, that make it easy for people to find what film is appropriate for them. For example the BBFC gave Deadpool a 15 age rating in the uk, so only people aged 15 and above could watch this film. On the other hand, with the advent of online streaming and technologies, it is becoming easier to illegally watch films online and disregard the age certificate. This limits the effectiveness of the BBFC as they have no jurisdiction online and can do nothing to stop this. Furthermore, the desensitisation of society means that more and more are able to and enjoy watching scenes of graphic violence and sex. This has led the BBFC to become more liberal in their certification.

OFCOM are partially effective as they are able to issue fines to tv networks in order to stop the airing of inappropriate content. Although, OFCOM do this reactively, meaning, the damage is already done by the time they are issuing the fines.This leads to OFCOM being not as effective as the BBFC. The documentary Benefits Street depicted working clas people claim benefits . The show recived negative reviews with claims of it being “poverty porn”. Consequently the tweets on twitter bullied the participants of the show, with death threats being sent. Despite reviving 1800 complaints OFOM refused to remove the programme.

Moreover, social media is self regulated as stated before. It is non statutory. but also partially regulate reactively, relying on comments and complaints from the audience to inappropriate and offensive messages and content. Social media sites have their own set guidelines which they’re users are asked follow. YouTuber Logan Paul, produced a video in the Japanese suicide and received substantial backlash. His video was taken down and he was subsequently banned from YouTube for a week. This makes elf regulation partially effective.

A narrative theory is the way a story is told to the audience. I will be using Terror House’s trailer 'Bedviled' and discuss the narrative theories in it. This was the best trailer out of all of the previous years' work in my opinion. It is well edited and includes different camera techniques and mise-en-scene. There is the narrative theory of Binary Opposites by Levi Strauss in the trailer. The trailer only reveals part of the equilibrium and disequilibrium. It does not give us the resolution because this gives the plot away meaning there would be no reason to watch the movie in the first place. My summer trailer is a perfect example of what not to do as we included too much of the equilibrium and not enough disruption. This made it not as scary as we wanted.  Todorov's theory is equilibrium, disequilibrium and resolution. Task 4 (30 mins) Write a  300 word analysis  of how the following  themes and sub-texts  are raised in the film (with examples of scenes that do so) - what is the film trying to say, particularly through its ending? a) Teen Punishment  b) Gender & Sexuality c) Yonic & Phallic Imagery Punishment is depicted very explicitly in the film. The most significant example of this is when the Athlete and the Slut are about to have sex and then they’re attacked by the antagonists. In this example, the film is trying to warn teenagers from participating in pre-marital sex as it is considered a sin in several religions and is form of giving yourself away spiritually as well as physically.  Gender & Sexuality  In the film the men are shown to take the lead initially but the female character begins to adopt masculine traits. Week 2 - Task 3 Cabin In The Woods

WEEK 2 – TASK 3 Using your notes from class on sub-genre and Horror conventions, write a 300-word summary of HOW the film makes interesting use of the conventions of Horror and Sub-genres you have studied. Cabin in the Woods is a satirical horror movie making use of most of the sub genres of horror. The main sub-genre of the movie is slasher but it also features a prevalent theme of teen punishment, making the film a cautionary tale for teenagers. The main sub-genre of splatter is displayed through the iconography, theme of teen punishment, gender patriarchy and deaths of most of the characters. In splatter films the final girl usually adopts masculine traits in order to survive and defeat the villain. In Cabin in the Woods the final girl does try and defend herself with a gun but ends up choosing to want to die with her friend, the fool. This subverts the convention of the final girl always surviving adding to the satirical nature of the film. In the end though they both end up
