Media Language

Media Language refers to the language and codes of the film. Media language covers, sound, Mise-en-scene and semiotics. In terms of horror films, they use codes and conventions to identify them. I will be using my summer trailer, The Unbroken, to discuss the theories of media  language.

 Like with written and audio codes, we included in our summer trailer, a sound track with sound effects. For example the sound effect of the footsteps and heavy breathing connotes fear and creates fear tension for the audience. The title slates come in with the loud music adding to the tense atmosphere.

 Semiotics is the study of signs, and is used for the meaning of codes. We included teenagers in our trailer to present to the audience teen. Horror films can also use semiotics by the way it uses its characters in the film and how the narrative can tell you about those characters. In my summer trailer there are a group of teenage boys talking about sex and girls telling the audience that they were not virgins which is a part of teen punishment.

 One technical code is the use of camera. Throughout our summer trailer we used handheld and shaker camera techniques to simulate footage from the found footage genre of film. But since the trailer was supposed to be a representation of classic horror films with the standard format and settings we realised we should have stuck to classic film making techniques to show off the skills we learnt in class. Furthermore, our trailer did have normal horror movie characters, so we did follow convention in that aspect.

 We used face pace editing during the montage section of the trailer to increase the fear factor. At the beginning of the trailer the editing was slow, so as to set the atmosphere and build tension. In addition,    technical codes like transitions such as fade to black and cut to black were used in the trailer. The face paced editing connotes loss of control and fear in the trailer.

    WHAT is the SUBTEXT of your Trailer?
    WHAT are the 4 codes and WHAT is their purpose?
    WHAT is Denotation and Connotation?

    These are conventions - but WHAT are is the MEANING of these sounds? Not their purpose but what they represent?

Narratives

A narrative theory is the way a story is told to the audience. I will be using Terror House’s trailer 'Bedviled' and discuss the narrative theories in it. This was the best trailer out of all of the previous years' work in my opinion. It is well edited and includes different camera techniques and mise-en-scene. There is the narrative theory of Binary Opposites by Levi Strauss in the trailer. The trailer only reveals part of the equilibrium and disequilibrium. It does not give us the resolution because this gives the plot away meaning there would be no reason to watch the movie in the first place. My summer trailer is a perfect example of what not to do as we included too much of the equilibrium and not enough disruption. This made it not as scary as we wanted.  Todorov's theory is equilibrium, disequilibrium and resolution. Week 2 - Task 3 Cabin In The Woods

WEEK 2 – TASK 3 Using your notes from class on sub-genre and Horror conventions, write a 300-word summary of HOW the film makes interesting use of the conventions of Horror and Sub-genres you have studied. Cabin in the Woods is a satirical horror movie making use of most of the sub genres of horror. The main sub-genre of the movie is slasher but it also features a prevalent theme of teen punishment, making the film a cautionary tale for teenagers. The main sub-genre of splatter is displayed through the iconography, theme of teen punishment, gender patriarchy and deaths of most of the characters. In splatter films the final girl usually adopts masculine traits in order to survive and defeat the villain. In Cabin in the Woods the final girl does try and defend herself with a gun but ends up choosing to want to die with her friend, the fool. This subverts the convention of the final girl always surviving adding to the satirical nature of the film. In the end though they both end up
