Narratives

A narrative theory is the way a story is told to the audience. I will be using Terror House’s trailer 'Bedviled' and discuss the narrative theories in it. This was the best trailer out of all of the previous years' work in my opinion. It is well edited and includes different camera techniques and mise-en-scene. There is the narrative theory of Binary Opposites by Levi Strauss in the trailer. The trailer only reveals part of the equilibrium and disequilibrium. It does not give us the resolution because this gives the plot away meaning there would be no reason to watch the movie in the first place. My summer trailer is a perfect example of what not to do as we included too much of the equilibrium and not enough disruption. This made it not as scary as we wanted.

Todorov's theory is equilibrium, disequilibrium and resolution. In terror house's trailer they use disequilibrium for the montage scenes which a typical for horror trailers to include this allows the audience to get the action part of the film which will interest them. The trailer is non linear shown in the montage.  Comparing terror house's trailer to my summer one I believe I didn't used Todorov's theory correctly, I had no montage scenes in my trailer.

In Terror house they used the Strauss theory in a different way; there isn't a villain or hero. The protagonist is the antagonist. In Terror houses trailer you don't see many stock characters. My summer trailer did offer these, although it was unnecessary as it was only a teaser trailer. We had a group of friends, the jock, the nerd, etc. This was not needed as it was a teaser trailer so we needed less character development and more scares.

Barthes' theory is the enigma code which is what Terror house shows because we don't know who is the antagonist. We must assume that the girl is the antagonist. In addition to this the end of the trailer which includes a jump scare leaves the audience wandering what happened. Why is she possessed, why is she in a mental asylum. These are all are question which can be answered when watching the film. The trailer completes its purpose to get the target audience interested in watching the film.

" (P) WHY do Trailers all NOT follow this theory? WHY have NO equilibrium in a Teaser Trailer? (E) WHAT did these sections look like on screen - HOW did you edit them?

" (P) HOW is this related to demonstrate B.O.??? (E) WHAT does the B.O look like on screen - HOW have you filmed the B.O characters differently to contrast and juxtapose them?
