Week 2 - Task 4

Task 4 (30 mins) Write a 300 word analysis of how the following themes and sub-texts are raised in the film (with examples of scenes that do so) - what is the film trying to say, particularly through its ending?
a) Teen Punishment
b) Gender & Sexuality
c) Yonic & Phallic Imagery

Punishment is depicted very explicitly in the film. The most significant example of this is when the Athlete and the Slut are about to have sex and then they’re attacked by the antagonists. In this example, the film is trying to warn teenagers from participating in pre-marital sex as it is considered a sin in several religions and is form of giving yourself away spiritually as well as physically. Gender & Sexuality In the film the men are shown to take the lead initially but the female character begins to adopt masculine traits. In the first attack on the Athlete and the Slut, the Athlete takes on the stereotypical role of the ‘hero’ by defending the Slut who takes on role of the ‘damsel in distress’. This portrays females to be weaker and more likely to be victims because of their promiscuous behaviour whereas men are given a heroic title for saving them much like how women are condemned for being sexual and men are commended.Yonic & Phallic Imagery Towards the end the final girl character begins to adopt masculine traits by defending herself. She stabs one of the agents with a sword, a phallic object, which in a way is a form castrating the male character as she stabs him. Yonic imagery in the film would be the tunnel they pass through on the way to the cabin. A tunnel is similar to a corridor or hall way and in horror movies they symbolise passages to death which in this case is true because it’s leads them to their fate.
